TOKYO, US President Donald Trump has formally congratulated North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on his birthday, South Korea’s top presidential security adviser said Friday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, head of South Korea’s presidential national security office Chung Eui-yong had a brief meeting with Trump at the White House during a trip to Washington D.C. where he bore the message to President Moon Jae-in.
Trump had some congratulatory words for Kim on the occasion of his January 8 birthday and asked South Korean President Moon Jae-in to deliver the message, the report said. “As far as I know, the message was conveyed to North Korea in an appropriate manner,” Chung told reporters at Seoul’s international airport.
Trump’s birthday message reflects his assertion of a good relationship with Kim despite a drawn-out stalemate in nuclear talks and Pyongyang’s renewed saber-rattling, the report said. Chung also said he had carried Moon’s message of respect and gratitude for Trump’s leadership in connection with efforts to resolve the Korean Peninsula issue.
