Symposium on Cultural Landscape Research on Al-Faw Archaeological Area

The Heritage Commission held yesterday the “Scientific Symposium on Cultural Landscape Research on the Al-Faw Archaeological Area” to uncover the social and civilizational aspects of Al-Faw’s archaeological area and its links with other kingdoms in the Arabian Peninsula and to understand the cultural context and environmental influences that have shaped Al-Faw throughout the ages.

Archaeologists and specialists from inside and outside Saudi Arabia took part in five sessions that delved into new analytical interpretations of inscriptions previously recorded at the site, the architectural influences, construction patterns, and old irrigation systems there, and ways to preserve the area through the use of modern technologies and AI.

The registration of the Cultural Landscape of Al-Faw Archaeological Area on the UNESCO World Heritage List resulted from the dedicated national efforts of the Kingdom’s UNESCO delegation, led by the Heritage Commission in collaboration with the Saudi National Commission for Educat
ion, Culture and Science, the Emirate of Riyadh, the National Center for Wildlife, King Saud University, and the local community of Wadi Al-Dawasir Governorate.

It also aligns with the Heritage Commission’s efforts to preserve the Kingdom’s rich heritage and raise awareness of its significance among local and international communities. This endeavour aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aims to increase the number of Saudi sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and promote the Kingdom’s Islamic, Arab, and national heritage.
