Syrian opposition call for UNSC emergency session on Idlib

ISTANBUL, The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces called on the UN Security Council on Thursday to convene an emergency session to take the necessary steps to stop the attacks on residential neighborhoods in Idlib.

In a statement, the media center of the Syrian opposition coalition said that during the past few days, the shelling has hit various cities, villages and towns in the area, targeting residential neighborhoods, civil defense centers, schools and hospitals, leaving dozens of dead and wounded in addition to extensive destruction.

“The regime and its allies’ attacks on civilian areas in Idlib and its environs are systematic war crimes aimed at killing and displacing civilians in the first place,” said the coalition.

It stressed that the duties of the international community through its official institutions impose to shoulder its responsibilities towards what is happening, especially with regard to stopping war crimes and working to hold criminals accountable.

The statement added that the coalition is in touch with the envoys and representatives of international parties, stressing the need for effective countries to exert actual and urgent pressure and take practical measures to stop the ongoing campaign.
