WASHINGTON, US President Donald Trump announced Wednesday the release of the three Americans held in North Korea.
“I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting. They seem to be in good health,” Trump tweeted.
“Also, good meeting with Kim Jong Un. Date and Place set,” he added.
Meanwhile, the White House said in a statement that during Pompeo’s visit to North Korea to prepare for Trump’s upcoming meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, “the North Korean leadership released three American detainees.” It noted that Trump “appreciates leader Kim Jong Un’s action to release these American citizens, and views this as a positive gesture of goodwill.” “The three Americans appear to be in good condition and were all able to walk on the plane without assistance,” it remarked.
Furthermore, State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a separate statement that Pompeo met with Chairman Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang.
She added they had “a productive discussion on a range of issues, including the upcoming meeting between President Trump and Chairman Kim.” “The Secretary also secured the release of three Americans and is delighted to bring them home,” she remarked.
