Trump makes surprise visit to US troops in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, US President Donald Trump visited Thursday troops in Bagram air base in a surprise visit to Afghanistan.

According to pool reports, Trump is expected to be on the ground for less than three hours “as a part of a surprise Thanksgiving trip to thank US troops for their service.” The pool report added that Trump also held a bilateral meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani “in which he announced he has restarted peace negotiations with the Taliban and said that he believes the Taliban wants a ceasefire,” and “also confirmed he would like to reduce the number of US troops in Afghanistan to 8,600.” White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham told traveling press during a gaggle “it’s a dangerous area and he wants to support the troops,” saying “it?’s truly about Thanksgiving and supporting the troops.” According to pool reports, Air Force One took off from Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday evening and landed at Bagram Air Base Thursday evening local time, noting that “the plane took off and landed in the dark with interior lights off and shades drawn.”
