WASHINGTON, US President Donald Trump said Friday that sanctions on Iran would not be lifted in exchange for a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
On Twitter, Trump revealed, “Iran wanted me to lift the sanctions imposed on them in order to meet. I said, of course, NO!” Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters in New York on Wednesday, “We want a peaceful resolution with the Islamic Republic of Iran. We’re hoping we can get that way. In the end, it’ll be up to the Iranians to make that decision.” In his speech to the 74th UN General Assembly, President Hassan Rouhani stressed that lifting sanctions on his country was the only way for Tehran to enter into negotiations with Washington and hold a meeting between the two heads of states.
