Trump says pause of Turkish operation in N. Syria great day for civilization

WASHINGTON, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that reaching a deal with Turkey to suspend its military operation in northern Syria “is a great day for civilization”, adding it saved millions of lives.

On his Twitter account, Trump said, “This deal could NEVER have been made three days ago. There needed to be some “tough” love in order to get it done. Great for everybody. (I’m) Proud of all!” He noted that he is proud of the United States for sticking by him in following a necessary, but somewhat unconventional, path. He said people have been trying to make this “Deal” for many years, referring that millions of lives will be saved. He thanked VP Mike Pence and Secretary Mike Pompeo for the negotiations in Turkey.

When those guns started shooting they had to do something, he said, adding that Turkey suffered a lot of loss of lives as well.

“Sanctions and tariffs were going to be biting but we don’t have to do it. Sanctions won’t be necessary Just want to thank and congratulate President Erdogan. Tough man and a strong man.” “Outcome they’ve been trying to get for 10 years. Want to thank the Kurds, they’ll be happy with this solution. We saved their lives. Great day for the Kurds,” he said.

“We’re going to have people watching ISIS (the so-called Islamic State). And ISIS will be largely watched by the Kurds. Very few have gotten out. ISIS fighters under very powerful and strict control. We’ve gotten everything we could’ve dreamed of. We’ll be able to have total control.

“Took a lot of heat from a lot of people even some of the people in my own party. Not about Republicans and Democrats, this is about our nation,” he concluded. Earlier, US Vice President Mike Pence announced an agreement between his country and Turkey on pausing Turkey’s anti-terror operation in northern Syria for five days to allow for the withdrawal of YPG forces from the safe-zone.

Pence noted that the US agreed to withdraw its sanctions against Turkey “once a permanent cease-fire is reached.”
