WASHINGTON, US President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that “sometime, probably next week” his administration could say that “we will have 100 percent of the caliphate.” In remarks to the Meeting of the Ministers of the Global Coalition to Defeat (IS), Trump said “it should be formally announced sometime, probably next week, that we will have 100 percent of the caliphate, but I want to wait for the official word. I don’t want to say it too early.” He noted “the US military, our coalition partners and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have liberated virtually all of the territory previously held by (IS) in Syria and Iraq.” He added that over the past two years “we have had victory after victory after victory,” and that “together we have freed more than five million civilians from the grip of these blood thirsty killers,” in reference to IS fighters.
“Thanks to the global coalition and to our other partners, the (IS) caliphate has been decimated,” he remarked.
He stressed as “we continue to destroy the remnants, that is all they have, remnants, but remnants can be very dangerous. But we have remnants of (IS), we look forward to giving our brave warriors in Syria a warm welcome back home.” He affirmed “rest assured, we’ll do what it takes to defeat every ounce and every last person within the (IS) madness and defend our people from radical Islamic terrorism.” “The struggle against terrorism is a shared fight, we do it together Everyone must do their part and contribute their fair share,” he remarked.
For its part, the White House said that Trump and his Administration “remain committed to destroying (IS), concentrating on civilian-lead stabilization, and preventing (IS)’s resurgence.” Meanwhile, a senior administration told reporters that “we’re down to a minimal amount of territory still controlled by (IS), and expect that to be wrapped up shortly.” “So as we welcome our American soldiers home from that very discreet mission, we are, at this moment, engaging with our friends and partners in the coalition to map out the next phases of the struggle against (IS), which of course includes the vicious ideology that they espouse,” the official stressed.
