Trump: Time to get out of “endless wars”

WASHINGTON, US President Donald Trump affirmed Monday his resolve to bring back the US troops operating in troubled Syria.

“It’s time” for the US to get out “of these ridiculous and endless wars,” and bring American soldiers back home, Trump said shortly after his decision to pull back troops from northern Syria as Turkey prepares for a military operation there.

In a series of tweets, Trump said the US “was supposed to be in Syria for 30 days and that was many years ago, pointing out it got ” deeper and deeper into battle with no aim in sight.” He affirmed “we quickly defeated 100 percent of the (IS) Caliphate, including capturing thousands of (IS) fighters, mostly from Europe” — alluding to the militants of the so-called Islamic State movement, also known in Arabic as “Daesh.” Trump went on to emphasize it was time to get out of “these ridiculous and endless wars, many of them tribal, and bring our soldiers home,” saying Turkey, Europe, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Russia and the Kurds will “now have to figure the situation out.” In a statement late Sunday, the White House said that Turkey “will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into Northern Syria.” It added that the US military will not support or be involved in the operation,” after Washington began pulling back troops from northern Syria early Monday.
