Turkish plane incident toll reaches 3 official

ISTANBUL Turkish Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca said on Thursday that casualty toll of Wednesday’s passenger plane incident climbed to three deaths and 179 injuries.

The aircraft, which was on a domestic flight, broke into three pieces upon landing at the airport late on Wednesday. The plane, belonging to Turkey’s Pegasus Airlines, made a rough landing. The Boeing 737 was carrying 171 passengers and six member crew from Izmir province to Sabiha Gokcen airport in Istanbul. It skidded off the runway due to poor weather conditions, broke into three pieces and caught fire.

The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals while all flights to and from Sabiha Gokcen were redirected to nearby airports.

On snow avalanches in East Turkey, the minister said in a statement that 56 people were wounded in latest such incidents.

At least 38 people died in such incidents over the two days in eastern Turkish regions.
