LONDON, The UK government on Monday recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as the interim president of Venezuela.
“So UK alongside European allies now recognizes Guaido as interim constitutional president until credible elections can be held,” British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said in a statement.
He said the people of Venezuela have suffered so much so it is now time for a new beginning with free and fair elections in line with international democratic criteria.
“Nicolas Maduro has not called presidential elections within 8 day limit we have set,” Hunt added.
France, Spain, Austria, Britain, Sweden, Denmark and Germany have already recognized Guaido as Venezuela’s interim president.
