Cairo: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgent need to expedite the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on addressing inequality and ensuring affordable housing for all. His remarks were part of the opening address for the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF) held in Egypt.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Guterres highlighted the importance of supporting developing nations in planning and constructing cities that are safe, healthy, and sustainable. He noted that cities serve as powerful catalysts for social and economic development while also offering sustainable solutions.
The forum was attended by Egypt’s President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi, along with various leaders, prime ministers, and high-level delegations from the UN and international bodies. Kuwait participated with a delegation led by Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Minister of State for Housing Affairs Abdullatif Al-Meshari, representing His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

xecutive Director of the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Anaclaudia Rossbach, remarked on the significant attention urban societies have paid to these issues since the forum’s inception. She expressed optimism that the forum would foster communication and transformation within urban societies, commending Egypt’s efforts in hosting the event.
Jan van Zanen, The Hague mayor and head of the world association for municipal governments, stated that the forum occurs amidst global conflicts and wars that adversely affect urban societies. He stressed the need for collective cooperation to tackle urban development challenges and honor future commitments.
The forum addresses the critical role of local action in advancing urban sustainability and related topics. It features over 500 sessions and workshops aimed at accelerating the implementation of new urban agendas and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
