NEW YORK, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary General, said Tuesday the UN still maintains that the Jewish settlement activities on the occupied Palestinian territories constitute flagrant violation of the international law.
The UN Security Council Resolution 2334 (2016) provides that Israel must immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, he said in his daily press briefing. “That is the last settled position of the UN Security Council. That remains our guidance,” Dujarric said, affirming, “I can say for our part our position remains unchanged.” He noted that the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regrets the statement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that the resolution 2334 is in contravention of the UN Charter and international law.
“The Secretary-General regularly reports – periodically reports on Resolution 2334. That also remains our guiding light. “And the resolution states that Israeli settlement activities are flagrant violations under international law, and a major obstacle to the achievement of the two state solution and a just and lasting comprehensive peace. “And that remains the Secretary General’s position,” Dujarric said, adding, “What I can tell you, as far as we’re concerned, we remain guided by relevant Security Council resolutions.” “We remain committed to supporting the Palestinians and Israelis to achieve lasting and durable peace based on those resolutions,” the spokesperson added.
The number of illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories topped 240 with a total population of 650,000.
