UN Special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said Friday warring parties have abided by a ceasefire in Douma, Eastern Ghouta, over past six days, while negotiations showed possible implementation of UN resolution 2401.
Resolution 2401, adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council (UNSC) late last month, called for a 30-day truce in Syria to allow delivery of humanitarian aid for the needy and evacuation of the sick persons.
De Mistura, addressing the UNSC in a video-conference call, said fighting have nevertheless continued in other parts of Eastern Ghouta last week.
UN, he added, was ready to reach out to all parties to reach agreements to contribute to concrete implementation of UN resolution 2401 in all areas of Eastern Ghouta.
De Mistura said violence escalated in many other areas like Afrin, Idleb, Fou’a and Kafraya.
The UN envoy said there were reports that chlorine was used as a weapon in the conflict in Syria, but the UN could not verify these reports.
De Mistura expressed concern over the fate of three million people in besieged areas in different parts of Syria.
