BAGHDAD, The UN urged the Iraqi parliament Wednesday to approve a new electoral law that would honor demands of protesters.
Reforming the electoral law is a major demand of the protesters, the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said in a statement, and commended the Iraqi authorities’ endeavors to seek legislative solutions.
The reform process is owned by the Iraqi people, it noted, but the UN was ready to offer expertise.
Head of UNAMI Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert urged the Iraqi MPs to work on meeting demands of their voters in order to secure free and fair elections.
The Iraqi parliament approved, in the first reading, the new electoral law. The second reading is expected next week.
