BRUSSELS, The unemployment rate in the 28-member European Union was 6.2 percent in August, down from 6.3 percent in July and from 6.7 percent in August 2018.
This is the lowest rate recorded in the EU since January 2000, Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, reported Monday.
The 19-member euro area unemployment rate was 7.4 percent in August, down from 7.5 percent in July and from 8.0 percent in August 2018. This is the lowest rate recorded in the euro area since May 2008, it noted.
Eurostat estimates that 15.432million men and women in the EU, of whom 12.169 million in the euro area, were unemployed in August 2019.
Compared with August 2018, unemployment fell by 1.189 million in the EU and by 960,000 in the euro area.
