UNIFIL hails indictment of culprits in murder of peacekeeper

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) hailed the indictment by a Lebanese military tribunal against five men of killing an Irish UN peacekeeper in south Lebanon in January.

The indictment is “an important step towards justice and bringing the culprits to book,” UNIFIL’s spokesperson Andrea Tenenti said in a statement on Thursday.

The attacks against male and UN peacekeepers, males or females, who serve the cause of peace are serious crimes that cannot go unpunished, he pointed out.

Tenenti voiced hope that today’s indictment would help do justice to the slain Irish peacekeeper Sean Rooney and the three others who were injured in the attack.

A UNIFIL convoy of two armored vehicles came under gunfire while travelling from Al-Aqebiya village to Beirut on January 14, 2023.

Earlier today, Justice Fady Sowan, a Lebanese investigating judge, charged five persons of attacking the Irish peacekeeping patrol.
