US appoints Special Envoy for South Sudan

WASHINGTONThe US Department of State announced Friday its appointment of W. Stuart Symington IV as Special Envoy for South Sudan.

The Department of State said in a statement that Special Envoy Symington “will lead US efforts to support the peace process and a successful political transition in South Sudan.” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement earlier this month that “January 1, 2020 marked the halfway point of the most recent extension to form an inclusive unity government,” urging “the Government of South Sudan and opposition leaders to act now to distance themselves from peace process spoilers and to prioritize the will of the South Sudanese people for peace.” The Department of State had renewed last November its Travel Advisory for South Sudan to Level Four Do Not Travel “due to crime, kidnapping and armed conflict.”
