US considers USD 1.31 bln military sale to Saudi Arabia

WASHINGTON, The US approved a possible military sale worth 1.31 billion in self-propelled Howitzer structures and systems to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The sale will include verification testing, technical support, and personnel training, the State Department said in a statement on Thursday.

“This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of an important partner which has been and continues to be a leading contributor of political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” the statement said.

“This sale will increase the Royal Saudi Land Force’s interoperability with US forces and conveys US commitment to Saudi Arabia’s security and armed forces modernization,” it added.

The prime contractor at this time is unknown but the implementation of the sale will not require the assignment of any additional US or contractor representatives. But support teams will be sent on a temporary basis.
