US discovers 13th new coronavirus case

WASHINGTON A US national who had earlier been evacuated from Wuhan, China, has been confirmed as 13th person in the country to test positive for the novel coronavirus, health officials said on Tuesday.

The individual had originally been under federal quarantine in San Diego since arriving on US soil, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has warned that the deadly virus’ impacts on the economy of China could “spill over to the rest of the global economy.” In his testimony to the House Financial Services Committee, he said the Fed was “closely monitoring” the situation.

“It is too early to say how much damage the illness will unleash, but there will clearly be implications, at least in the near term” for China and its neighbours, he predicted.
