US envoy for Syria to travel to Turkey

WASHINGTON, US Special Representative for Syria Engagement and Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat the so-called Islamic State (IS) James Jeffrey will travel to Turkey later this week for meetings with senior Turkish officials and members of the Syrian opposition.

The US Department of State said in a statement on Wednesday that Jeffrey will travel to Ankara and Istanbul on November 8-9 and is leading “an interagency delegation.” The statement added that he will discuss “issues of mutual concern to include, the current situation in northeast Syria, implementation of UNSCR 2254 on the resolution of the Syrian conflict, and our continued efforts to ensure an enduring defeat of (IS).” Last week, the Foreign Ministers of the Small Group on Syria welcomed the launch of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva on October 30 and reiterated that “There can be no military solution to the Syria crisis, only a political settlement on the basis of UNSC resolution 2254.”
