US hails SDF “contributions” against foreign IS fighters in Syria

WASHINGTON, The US Monday valued “contributions” of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alongside the US-Backed coalition in fight against so-called Islamic State (IS), and praised their “commitment” to detaining “foreign fighters” and returning them to their “countries of origin.” State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino said in a statement that the US “appreciates the contributions the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have made” alongside the coalition against (IS).

“With courage and resolve, the SDF took into custody hundreds of foreign terrorist fighters from dozens of countries around the world,” the statement added.

It asserted that “through their efforts,” IS “is now weakened and on the run, and the world is a safer place.

“Facing the extraordinary challenge of fighting a brutal enemy in a disciplined manner, the SDF has demonstrated a clear commitment to detain these individuals securely and humanely,” it added.

The statement called on the “other nations to repatriate and prosecute their citizens detained by the SDF.” It also commended “the continued efforts of the SDF to return these foreign terrorist fighters to their countries of origin.” It cautioned that IS “remains a significant terrorist threat and collective action is imperative to address this shared international security challenge,” despite the liberation of IS-held territory in Iraq and Syria.
