US House cmtes subpoena VP Pence over Trump impeachment

WASHINGTON, Three US House committees subpoenaed Vice President Mike Pence on Friday for documents related to the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

The subpoena was jointly issued by heads of the House Foreign Affairs Committee – Eliot Engel, Intelligence Committee – Adam Schiff, and Oversight and Reform Committee – Elijah Cummings.

In a joint letter to Pence, the Democratic Representatives wrote, “Pursuant to the House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry, we are hereby requesting that you produce the documents set forth in the accompanying schedule by October 15, 2019.” “Recently, public reports have raised questions about any role you may have played in conveying or reinforcing the President’s stark message to the Ukrainian President (Volodymyr Zelensky).

The Committees are investigating the extent to which President Trump jeopardized national security by pressing Ukraine to interfere with our 2020 election and by withholding security assistance provided by Congress to help Ukraine counter Russian aggression,” according to the letter.

Trump has allegedly applied pressures on the Ukrainian government to investigate Hunter Biden – the son of Joe Biden, or face the threat of withholding the nearly USD 400 million in US military assistance.

In so doing, he was trying to mar the image of Joe Biden – the former vice president and the candidate of the Democratic Party for the 2020 presidential elections.
