WASHINGTON, The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced Monday imposing sanctions against Russian individuals for attempting to influence the 2018 US midterm elections.
“Today’s action also increases pressure on previously designated person Yevgeniy Prigozhin by targeting his physical assets, including three aircraft and a yacht, as well as employees of the Internet Research Agency,” OFAC said in a statement.
“This administration will work tirelessly to safeguard our electoral process, and will aggressively pursue any other foreign actor that attempts to interfere in the 2020 elections,” it affirmed.
The statement also reiterated the US government’s keenness to safeguard the country’s democratic processes from adversaries, primarily Russia, Iran, and China, that may be seeking to influence the upcoming 2020 elections.
For his part, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said his country we will not tolerate foreign interference in its elections.
“The United States will continue to push back against malign actors who seek to subvert our democratic processes and we will not hesitate to impose further costs on Russia for its destabilizing and unacceptable activities,” stated Pompeo.
