US targets Chinese electronics with USD 50 bln in tariffs

WASHINGTON, In part of the President Donald Trump’s response to China’s “unfair trade practices,” the US proposed imposing USD 50 billion tariffs on Chinese tech items.

“The proposed list of products is based on extensive interagency economic analysis and would target products that benefit from China’s industrial plans while minimizing the impact on the US economy,” said a statement from the Office of US Trade Representative Tuesday.

The 25 percent import tax aims to penalize China for policies that the US says put its companies at a disadvantage.

Items include lithium batteries, medical devices, snow blowers, weapons, construction machinery and television parts.

The list covers approximately 1,300 separate tariff lines and will undergo further review and then a final determination will be made on the products subject to the additional duties. (end) ak.gta
