The United States welcomed the meeting between North and South Korea on Tuesday over the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. The US remains in close consultations with South Korean officials “who will ensure North Korean participation in the Winter Olympics does not violate the sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council over North Korea’s unlawful nuclear and ballistic missile programs,” State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert. President Donald Trump spoke with South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in last week to pledge the US commitment to “a safe and successful” Winter Olympics set to take place in the South Korean city in February.
Washington is sending a high-level presidential delegation to the Games. Two leaders also agreed to continue the maximum pressure campaign against North Korea in order to reach the goal of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, Nauert said.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson remains in closely consultation with South Korea’s Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, she added.
