World Cup tourney kicks off, Putin hopes sports will make nations closer

The 2018 world cup tournament kicked off on Thursday at Moscow’s largest stadium Luzhniki with performances by the British singer Robbie Williams and the Russian opera singer Aida Garifullina.

The ceremony was distinguished with musical performances and folkloric dances, amid cheers by thousands of soccer fans packing Russia’s largest and newest stadium.

Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the ceremony welcoming the guests and expressing jublation for hosting the world cup games.

He hoped that sports would help in tackling racial discrimination, narrow the gulf among nations to boost global peace.

FIFA President Gianni Infanito also addressed the huge crowd urging nations to enjoy the great sports event and thanking Putin for the enormous efforts for hosting the games.
