Baghdad -The National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji chaired Today, Wednesday, a special meeting of the committee concerned with reviewing and developing the classification system inside prisons, which was presented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Organized Crime in Iraq.
The Chancellery stated in a statement: “The meeting was attended from the Iraqi side by the Senior Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, Ziyad Al-Tamimi, directors of correctional and juvenile prisons, and representatives of the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Interior, and from the UN side, Ali Al-Barir, Director of the United Nations Office in Iraq, and experts in this field.”
Al-Araji stressed at the beginning of the meeting: “The killings taking place in Gaza are unacceptable and these attacks must be stopped and the war zone not expanded.”
In the context of the topic, Al-Araji stressed the importance of benefiting from all the international experience provided by the United Nations, to develop the reality of Iraqi prisons.
The meeting also discussed the mechanisms of the Ministry of Justice with regard to preparing curricula and training manuals and developing a standard work manual to be consistent with international requirements for prison administration, and to be able to confront the challenges that Iraqi prisons may be exposed to.
The meeting also included a presentation of international assistance, which included implementing four projects (reviewing and updating the classification system inside prisons, developing policies and protocols for risk assessments, conducting training for prison workers, and identifying technical candidates specialized in classification), so that they could be used while taking into account the security privacy of the Ministry of Justice in line with national laws and instructions.
The attendees also discussed the mechanism for training workers in the prison administration and developing the work of Iraqi cadres within the framework of implementing these programs. The meeting recommended the need to hold a meeting between United Nations experts and Ministry of Justice specialists to initiate the necessary technical procedures to implement the program.
