Blinken meets AU Commission Chair in Addis Ababa

WASHINGTON, March 16 (KUNA) — US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat on Thursday to discuss follow up to the US-Africa Leaders Summit and ways to further deepen the the US-AU partnership.

During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing peace, security, and prosperity throughout Africa,” according to a statement attributable to State Spokesperson Ned Price.

“They expressed their desire to work closely together on issues including trade and investment, food security, and democratic governance.

“Secretary Blinken underscored the importance of strengthening the relationship between the United States and Africa,” the statement noted.

“He reaffirmed our support for the African Union joining the G20 as a permanent member and highlighted the US government’s commitment to supporting the AU’s Agenda 2063, which aims to accelerate the socio-economic development of Africa over the next 40 years.

“In closing, Secretary Blinken expressed his gratitude for Chairperson Faki’s leadership and the opportunity to engage in constructive dialogues – an important opportunity to follow up on commitments made as part of the US-Africa Leaders Summit held in Washington in December 2022,” the statement added.
