BRUSSELS, March 13 (KUNA) — The European Union Monday said China is an important international that can contribute to stabilization of regional tensions in a positive manner.

“The recent example of China’s role in the facilitation of an agreement aimed at re-establishing diplomatic relations between Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran shows China can contribute to stabilization of regional tensions in a positive manner,” EU lead spokesperson Peter Stano told a news conference in Brussels.

“The EU is always encouraged when we see signs of normalization in relations. This is what the world nowadays needs more than anything else,” he said in reply to a question by KUNA.

“China is an important international player. China as a permanent member of the UN Security Council has a special position, but also a responsibility to contribute to the respect of the UN Charter and upholding the international law,” he said.

The spokesman urged “China to use this role in efforts to make Russia stop it’s illegal aggression against Ukraine and we expect China to use the possibilities it has to contribute also to solving other problems around the globe.” Asked by another journalist as to why the EU does not accept China’s recent peace plan to end the war in Ukraine, Stano replied, “you can be an honest peace broker when you don’t take sides.” “When it comes to Russia, Ukraine, China is actually taking sides.
