European Commission chief to visit China with Macron in early April

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel together with French President Emmanuel Macron during his trip to China in early April, her spokesman Eric Mamer announced Friday.

Von der Leyen will give a speech on EU-China relations at a think-tank in Brussels next Thursday, Mamer said on his twitter message.

“She will then travel to China with French President Emmanuel Macron the following week. Details and programme will follow,” he added.

Observers note that this will be the first visit of von der Leyen as the President of the European Commission to China.

Earlier, speaking at a press conference at the end of an EU leaders’ summit in Brussels, Macron said he had “suggested to von der Leyen that she accompany him to China” on April 4 so they could speak “with a unified voice.”
