European Parliament calls for strong, pro-human rights cooperation

BRUSSELS, The European Union Wednesday adopted it annual report on the situation of human rights and democracy in the world, raising alarm about the decline of democracy and human rights around the world.

The report, adopted by 438 votes in favour, 75 against and 121 abstentions, voices concern over rise of authoritarian regimes and serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in an increasing number of places around the world.

To counter this, the EP report says the effective protection of human rights requires strong international, multilateral cooperation.

It calls on the EU to continue supporting the UN, both politically and financially and including all UN human rights bodies.

The report surveys a broad range of issues, including the rights of national and ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, as well as freedom of expression and religion, respect for international and humanitarian law and the situation in Ukraine.

The report also takes stock of human rights in the context of the EU’s trade policy. MEPs urge the EU to make consistent use of clauses in trade agreements that protect human rights, including closer monitoring and enforcement of human rights commitments.

“In this report, we express our concern about the decline of human rights and democracy in the world,” said the rapporteur of the report Isabel Wiseler-Lima after the vote. “We emphasize the role the EU has in defending democracy and the absolute necessity for member states and the EU to remain united. This is the only way for the EU to have more impact in our diplomacy and policies,” she added.
