France completes evacuation of nationals, foreigners from Niger

France announced completing the evacuation of its nationals and other foreigners out of Niger on Thursday, due to the violence against the French Embassy and the shut down of airspace.

The evacuation operations were conducted by joint coordination between the French foreign ministry and the armed forces, under direct orders from President Emmanuel Macron, the ministry said in a statement.

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, France evacuated 1,079 people among them are 577 French nationals. It added that the French army also evacuated others from 50 nationalities, including Europeans, Africans, Americans, Canadians, Brazilians, Colombians, Bahamas Islands nationals, Australians, Asians, Lebanese and Turkish people.

Last week, a coup in Niger led to the breakout of protests against Niger’s former colonial ruler and traditional ally, France.
