France, Germany, UK alarmed at Iran’s mounting uranium enrichment

PARIS, France, along with Germany and Britain, on Thursday expressed deep alarm at latest reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) affirming that Iran elevated production of enriched uranium.

The three states said in a joint statement that Iran accelerated the uranium enrichment, getting closer to the level warranted for making arms.

Tehran’s step constitutes flagrant breach of its pledges in this respect, the statement said, urging Tehran to instantly halt such activities.

It also called upon Tehran to re-dispatch a delegation to Vienna as soon as possible for resuming the talks “for time in not in favor of any of the stakeholders.” IAEA director Rafael Grossi has informed the agency member states that Iran was boosting uranium enrichment at Natanz nuclear plant.

Iran has gradually backed down from its nuclear commitments since 2019. Washington unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 agreement between Iran and super powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that relieves Tehran of curbs provided it freezes nuclear program.

Iran and these powers had held six rounds of talks in Vienna in a bid to revive the accord. However, diplomatic efforts have remained inconclusive.
