G7 leaders: upcoming Afghan gov’t must adhere to int’l obligations

LONDON, The Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) called on Tuesday the Afghan government, which is being formed by the Taliban group, to respect international obligations, protect human, women and children rights as well as fight terrorism.

In a statement after a summit held virtually under the presidency of the United Kingdom, the G7 leaders affirmed steadfast commitment to the people of Afghanistan, and support the UN Security Council statement of 16 August.

The statement urged the Afghan parties to form a government that includes and represents all society segments, especially women and ethnic minorities.

Furthermore, the statement stressed that the G7 leaders, regional countries, through the UN, G20, and more widely, will bring the international community together to address Afghanistan’s critical questions.

The meeting chaired by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was attended by leaders of the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany and Italy, in addition to the President of the European Commission, the Secretary-General of the UN and the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
