Germany’s general strike Mon. to cause major disruptions

Public transport companies and several workers unions throughout Germany are expected to hold a general strike on Monday, causing major disruptions and crippling the transportation of millions.

The United Services Trade Union (verdi) and Railway and Transport Union (EVG) put out identical statements on the strike, which would cripple air, road, railway, and marine transportations in all German cities and regions.

Some 230,000 employees of EVG alone would halt the railway operations in the country.

The strike comes due to the lack of agreement on increasing wages to 10.5 percent with job owners attributing their inability to oblige to increases inflation as well as prices of energy and food products.

Business owners maintain that wages increase would not exceed five percent.

There will be a third round of negotiations between worker unions and business owners to look into the matter thoroughly.

Meanwhile, the aviation industry would face a similar strike with many flights to be canceled from and to major airports throughout the country.

The strike, deemed as a “mega strike” by several news outlets, would also affect seaports and is expected to begin midnight Monday and last for 24 hours
