Guterres warns: Sudan is on the brink of a massive civil war

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, warned today, Sunday, from the capital, Khartoum, that Sudan stands on the brink of a “broad civil war”, with the continuation of the raging clashes between the two parties to the conflict.

Guterres sounded the alarm in a press statement, warning that the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces would destabilize the entire region.

Sudan descended into chaos after months of tension between the army commander, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his rival, Major General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April.

“There is a complete disregard for humanitarian law and human rights law, and this is a serious and disturbing matter,” Guterres said.

The Sudanese Minister of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, said in televised statements last month that the clashes resulted in the death of more than 3,000 people and the injury of more than 6,000, but there are expectations that the death toll will be much higher.

According to United Nations data, more than 2.9 million people have fled their homes to safer areas inside Sudan or crossed into neighboring countries.
