India summons High Commissioner of Canada to protest attack against mission

India said on Sunday that it summoned High Commissioner of Canada to convey strong concern about the actions of separatist and extremist elements against its diplomatic Mission and Consulates in Canada this week.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement today that that the government of India sought an explanation after summoning the High Commissioner of Canada on how such elements were allowed, in the presence of police, to breach the security of the diplomatic Mission and Consulates.

India also reminded Canada of its obligations under the Vienna Convention, and demanded to arrest and prosecute identified as being involved in such acts.

The ministry also said: “It is expected that the Canadian Government will take all steps which are required to ensure the safety of our diplomats and security of our diplomatic premises so that they are able to fulfil their normal diplomatic functions.” Earlier, Indian government had summoned the US and UK embassy officials to register its strong protest after property of Indian missions were attacked.

Indian diplomatic missions in Canada, the US and the UK came under attack by the separatist movement Khalistan which demands a seperate homeland for the Sikh community in Punjab.
