Irregular Immigration Attempt: Eight People Drowned in the Mediterranean (Local Authorities)


Eight people drowned on Tuesday in the Mediterranean during an attempt of irregular immigration, according to the local authorities of Nador’s province.

The victims were part of a group of irregular migrants who were attempting to cross the Mediterranean aboard a Zodiac boat from the Tcharana-Boumahfoud area, which falls under the municipality of Beni Chiker, before the sinking of their inflatable boat due to adverse weather conditions characterized by strong gusts of wind and high waves.

The intervention of local authorities, the Royal Gendarmerie, the Royal Navy, and the Civil Protection services allowed for the assistance of 9 individuals and the recovery of 8 bodies, the same source reported, noting that the search continues to locate any potential missing persons.

An investigation has been launched by the relevant authorities under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office to determine the details of this incident, according to the same source.
