Italy, US coordinate int’l financial support to Tunisia

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani discussed with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken the latest developments in the political and economic crises of Tunisia.

In a phone conversation on Tuesday afternoon, Tajani underlined the urgency of constant Italian-US coordination regarding adequate and effective international financial support for Tunisia, according to a statement from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

“Tunisia is a central player for the security and stability of the Mediterranean,” Tajani said, adding, “Italy is ready, through ever closer collaboration with EU countries and the United States, to contribute to the country’s stability.” “We must carry out joint action so that the main international financial institutions can intervene in support of Tunisia, which in turn will necessarily have to undertake a path of sustainable and effective reforms,” he stressed.

That statement noted that the Italian government has been strongly committed to strengthening cooperation with the main countries in the enlarged Mediterranean, to encourage greater collaboration on the main dossiers of common interest, including the migration issue.

At Italy’s request, Tunisia was included last week in the discussions of both the Council of Europe and the EU Council of Foreign Ministers, during which the EU renew its commitment to assist the North African country, in particular through a supplementary package of macroeconomic assistance, the statement added.
