Jazan Yields over 6,300 Tons of Fish, Shellfish Annually


Jizan, The regional waters of Jazan and its coastline, estimated at more than 330 kilometers, are suitable for the growth of fish, contributing 6,394 tons of fish and shellfish annually.

According to a report issued by the Jazan Chamber of Commerce, the annual yield includes 1,753 tons of narrow-barred Spanish mackerel, 1,261 tons of emperor fish, 87 tons of shellfish, 794 tons of bagrus, 740 tons of barracudas, 444 tons of sharks and rays, 469 tons of groupers, 442 tons of mixed fish, and 428 tons of tuna.

The report also shows that the size of fish-farming ponds in the region is estimated at 7.4 million cubic meters. There are also two fish farms in the region and over 6,000 fishermen, using nine docks and 1,051 fishing boats.

The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture seeks to develop rural areas and support Saudi youths. It had launched an initiative to localize fishing in the region by providing 57 equipped boats and refrigerated trucks for fish transportation throughout the region.
