Morocco is yet against setting its eye on hosting the FIFA World for the 2030 competition after attempting five times to host the prestigious football event.

This time around, Morocco is embedding itself within the Spanish and Portuguese bid to host the competition with many seeing this as a gesture of European and African solidarity.

Spanish and Portuguese Prime Ministers, Pedro Sanchez and Antonio Costa respectively, welcomed the joint bid to host the tournament.

On the Moroccan side, King Mohammad VI announced Morocco’s interest co-hosting the World Cup in a letter addressed to a meeting for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on March 13.

In the letter, the Moroccan Monarch said that this joint file is unprecedented in the history of the region, saying that it would boost relations between Europe as well as the Arab and African nations.

Morocco, through this joint bid, is eager to realize a 30-years dream in hosting the FIFA World Cup.

On this issue, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRWF) Fouzi Lekjaa affirmed to the press that efforts for the triparty file would begin soon to reach the goal of hosting the world cup.

Both the Spanish and Portuguese football federations also announced their preparations with Morocco to achieve this dream.

Since 1930, the World Cup was only co-host once in 2002 by Japan and South Korea.

In 2026, the US, Mexico, and Canada would co-host the FIFA World Cup tournament featuring 48 teams instead of 32.

The Moroccan-Spanish-Portuguese bid is facing competition from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Greece in addition to the joint bid offered by Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay.

Morocco tried to host the World Cup in 1994, 1998, 2006, 2010, and 2026, but did not win.

The host of the 2030 World Cup would be announced next year 2024. (end) mrn.gta
