Kuwait calls for ensuring UN agencies unimpeded access to people in Afghanistan

Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah underlined Wednesday the need for coordinated international action to allow UN agencies to resume work in Afghanistan to offer a helping hand to people in need across the war-torn country.

“Concerned countries have to coordinate with the relevant agencies, particularly the UN agencies to help mitigate the crisis in Afghanistan, provide humanitarian aid, overhaul infrastructure and protect Afghan people, ensure a dignified life for them and defend their rights,” Sheikh Ahmad, also minister of state for cabinet affairs, said in speech at a virtual meeting of foreign ministers on Afghanistan co-hosted by the US Secretary of State, Mr. Anthony Blinken, and the German Foreign Minister, Mr. Heiko Maas.

He expressed Kuwait’s backing to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ call for ensuring safe and unhindered access to UN agencies in Afghanistan.

Sheikh Ahmad stated that upon instructions from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait has worked side by side with the United States, Canada, and Italy to facilitate the evacuation of 15,000 people, from 32 nationalities, from Afghanistan since August 4.

Kuwait has helped ensure the safe passage of the evacuees through Kuwait to their final destinations and offered them with required humanitarian aid, he added.

The minister lamented that the crisis in Afghanistan had grave repercussions and caused huge losses: financial, to the infrastructure and more worse was the loss of human lives from the Afghan people and coalition forces.

Moreover, the crisis has caused massive exodus of tens of thousands of Afghans who fled their country to other countries as well as a deterioration in the economic situation in the country would gravely affect living conditions of the Afghan people, he explained.

Sheikh Ahmad reiterated Kuwait’s firm stance against violence and terrorism, and urged the international community to double efforts to eradicate this scourge.

He also stressed the need to do all in power to make sure that Afghanistan will not offer again a safe haven for terrorists and extremists.
