Kuwait committed to UN climate action — EPA cheif

Chairman and Director General of the Environment Public Authority (EPA) Sheikh Abdullah Ahmad Al-Humoud Al-Sabah said Kuwait spared no effort in implementing the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and meeting the requirements of the Paris Agreement.

“At the behest of the political leadership, Kuwait joined the international treaties aiming to curb the climate change and combat air pollution,” he told KUNA on Sunday.

Sheikh Abdullah was commenting on the signing by EPA and the Global Environment Facility of a contract to fund the third national reporting project and the second updated report.

EPA has also signed a two-year memorandum of understanding with the UN Environment Program on technical support, he noted.

“Kuwait will finalize working on both projects and hand over the relevant documents to the Secretariat of the UNFCCC by the end of 2025,” Sheikh Abdullah said, affirming that these projects will help advance the social and economic development and help protect environment.

After endorsing the Paris Agreement in 2018, Kuwait presented a document on its national contributions and updated the document in October, 2021, he pointed out.

On his part, Sami Dimassi, Director of the UNEP Regional Office for West Asia, said cooperation with EPA will contribute tangibly to the realization of Kuwait’s environment agenda and back up climate action in the region.

Kuwait joined the UNFCCC in March, 1995, thus becoming one of the earliest contributors to the global effort against climate change.
