Kuwaiti minister criticizes lack of coordination regarding parliamentary session

Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs Mubarak Al-Harees on Wednesday re-affirmed the government keenness on fruitful cooperation with the National Assembly for serving Kuwait’s higher interests.

The government could not express its opinion on most proposed bills, during the National Assembly session that was set today (but was adjourned), he said, noting that there was no proper and early coordination with the cabinet regarding today’s session.

The government received the invitation to participate in the session on Tuesday afternoon, 24 hours ahead of the scheduled session, he said, indicating that notifying the government at such short notice happened despite great significance of the bills and agenda’s topics.

The government could not attend the session, he said, noting there was no beforehand proper and early coordination, according to standard parliamentary practices.

Earlier today, National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim adjourned the parliament’s session on Wednesday, due to the absence of the government.

In a speech on canceling the session, Al-Ghanim noted that his decision was according to Article 116 of Kuwait’s Constitution, which indicates that “The Cabinet must be represented in the Parliament’s sessions by its president or some of its members,” said Al-Ghanim.

Al-Ghanim had called for this session based on parliamentary requests which included on its agenda the rights of special needs people, housing projects and their obstacles, harming citizens from real estate fraud and high construction prices.

The agenda also included real estate financing bill, proposals regarding elections of National Assembly members and the resignation of MP Yousef Al-Fadalah
