MEP from Luxembourg to replace Kaili as EP Vice-President

BRUSSELS, The European Parliament in Strasbourg elected in a secret vote on Wednesday Marc Angel from Luxembourg to the office of EP Vice-President.

It took two rounds of voting to obtain the necessary majority, said the EP in a press release.

Angel, who belongs to the Socialist and Democrats Group, will replace Greece’s Eva Kaili after she was remanded in custody on suspicion of money laundering, corruption and involvement in a criminal organisation.

The 60-year-old MEP from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party, a former teacher, was elected to the EP in 2019.

The EP President delegates specific duties to the 14 Vice-Presidents , who can replace her when necessary, including to chair full sittings.

These Vice-Presidents are also members of the European Parliament’s Bureau, which lays down the rules ensuring Parliament’s effective functioning.
