Morocco’s Central Bank Gov. Calls for reconnecting with Multilateralism to Face Current Challenges

Governor of Morocco’s central bank, Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), Abdellatif Jouahri, called for “reconnecting with multilateralism” to face the current economic and geopolitical context.

“We shall not bury multilateralism. We shall instead look at the results and try to build something positive for the future, while relying on stronger institutions, equipped with more secure and developed means, capable of responding to increasingly diversified, heavy and costly needs”, Mr. Jouahri pointed out during a discussion with Taline Koranchelian, Deputy Director in the Middle East and Central Asia Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as part of a special edition of IMF Finance & Development magazine.

Mr. Jouahri also highlighted the complexity that characterizes the context of the 2023 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF, scheduled for October 9-15 in Marrakech, marked notably by geopolitical and geoeconomic fragmentation combined with the changes in paradigms that the world is currently going through.

It will thus be “difficult to imagine what the Marrakech Declaration will be”, he said, highlighting the need to know what to prioritize and then how to monitor and evaluate the actions put in place.

This special edition of the IMF Finance & Development magazine is part of the 2023 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF, which will be held on October 9-15 in Marrakech, with the participation of more than 15,000 high-level delegates, including Economy and Finance ministers, governors of central banks of member countries, as well as representatives of civil society, the private sector, international media and academia.
