Putin: Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons in two cases

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, confirmed that in Russian military doctrine there are two reasons for the possible use of nuclear weapons, which are the attack on Russia and the existential threat to it.

Putin said today in a speech before the Valdai International Forum in the Russian city of Sochi: “Let me remind you that in Russian military doctrine there are two reasons for Russia’s possible use of nuclear weapons. The first is to use them against us, that is, in response to that, in what is called a counter-strike.”

He added, “The second reason for using these weapons is the existential threat to the Russian state. Even if conventional weapons are used against Russia, Russia’s existence as a state is at risk.”

The Russian President stressed that he does not see the need to lower the nuclear threshold in Russian doctrine, noting that today there is no such situation that threatens the existence of the Russian state.

He continued: “I do not think that anyone with their right mind and sound memory would ever think of using nuclear weapons against Russia.”

Putin stressed that it was necessary to respond to Western threats in Ukraine, and that the time of Western hegemony was ending.

The Russian President said: The United States has taken the approach of military, political, economic, humanitarian and even moral hegemony. However, the world is more complex than expected to be managed by one party.
