Qureshi discusses Afghan situation with OIC secretary general and Russian, German FMs

ISLAMABAD, Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Saturday discussed the situation in Afghanistan with his Russian and German counterparts and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary General, Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen.

According to the Pakistan Foreign Office, Qureshi has underscored that Pakistan will continue to play its constructive role in promoting sustainable peace and stability in Afghanistan.

In a telephonic conversation with Secretary General of the OIC, Yousef Al-Othaimeen, he expressed the hope that Afghan parties would work for an inclusive political settlement.

The foreign minister said the success of negotiations in Kabul would not only benefit Afghanistan but also the region. He emphasized that it is imperative for the international community to remain engaged with Afghanistan by supporting the country’s economy, reconstruction, rehabilitation and humanitarian needs.

Qureshi said it is also important for the Muslim world to show its traditional solidarity with the Afghan people in their quest for a peaceful, united, stable and prosperous Afghanistan.

Noting the significance of efforts towards establishing an inclusive government, the foreign minister warned about spoilers within and outside Afghanistan, who want to take advantage of the situation in the country.

He highlighted the role played by Pakistan in facilitating the evacuation and relocation of personnel of diplomatic missions, international organizations, media and others from Afghanistan.

The OIC Secretary General apprised the foreign minister of the extra-ordinary meeting of the OIC Executive Committee that has been convened in Jeddah to discuss the situation in Afghanistan, said Foreign Office.

Moreover, Qureshi has urged the international community to play its role in providing economic assistance to Afghans on humanitarian basis.

In a telephonic conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on telephone, the Pakistani foreign minister said Pakistan always supported the Afghan peace process.

He pointed out that in the present situation, the security of Afghan citizens and the protection of their rights should be a top priority.

He said Pakistan is committed to the early implementation of the Stream Gas Pipeline Project with Russia. Talking to his German counterpart Heiko Maas, the Foreign Minister said peace in Afghanistan is essential for stability in the region.
