Saudi Arabia Participates in Special Session on Sudan Human Rights

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia participated on Thursday in a special session of the U.N. Human Rights Council on the human rights situation in Sudan.

The Kingdom’s permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Abdul Mohsen bin Khuthailah, reiterated in his speech that the Kingdom stands by Sudan and its people to reach safety and stability in light of the unprecedented crisis in the country, adding that the priority at this stage is to restore calm and restraint, prioritize dialogue, and engage in talks to restore peace, and political stability to Sudan and its people.

Bin Khuthailah highlighted the Kingdom’s hosting of the two conflicting parties in preliminary talks in Jeddah, which started on May 6, 2023, adding that the hosting is a result of international solidarity and unremitting efforts with the United States of America and in partnership with the Quartet member states and the partners of the tripartite mechanism to reach a truce and cease-fire and facilitate access to humanitarian aid.

The permanent representative also affirmed that the Kingdom welcomes all regional initiatives to end the crisis, reach an agreement, and restore security and stability to Sudan, as opposed to taking steps that complicate the situation.

He stressed the need to respond to the humanitarian situation in Sudan, including protecting humanitarian operations, providing safe passages for humanitarian workers, and facilitating and securing evacuations of civilians. The permanent representative highlighted the Kingdom evacuating about 8,498 people from 110 nationalities, citing the Saudi leadership’s directives to provide humanitarian aid worth $100 million and organize a fundraising campaign through “SAHEM” platform to mitigate the effects of the crisis affecting the Sudanese people.
